Chronic Pain Management: Is There Hope?

“I suffer from Chronic Pain, but as my doctor puts it, it is all in my head”. This is a statement we hear far too often. Chronic pain is a burden that even when you try to shrug off it clings to your shoulders. Despite affecting millions of Australians, finding the most effective way to manage it remains a challenge.

Does this mean you should lose hope? We strongly believe… NO! Over the past 10 years, we have treated countless patients with chronic pain, finding commonalities in their experiences and learning valuable lessons on how to approach and improve their quality of life.

The Cycle of Chronic Pain

Many individuals who suffer from chronic pain fall into cycles of over reliance on medications, such as Oxycodone (Targin) or Buprenorphine (Subutex or Norspan), or seek invasive procedures like cortisone injections for temporary relief. When these options fail, some patients consider more drastic measures, such as spinal cord stimulators or nerve ablations, to find some level of comfort. While these treatments can benefit some, they often mask underlying issues without addressing the root causes of chronic pain.

Over time, this reliance on temporary solutions can lead to dependency and raise significant concerns about long-term recovery. Additionally, the risks of such invasive procedures, along with the uncertainty of sustained pain relief, make it essential to exhaust all conservative options first. Our team takes a comprehensive approach to managing pain, seeking sustainable solutions before considering more invasive interventions.

Our Approach to Chronic Pain

Through years of experience, our senior physiotherapist, Faraz Majlessi, recognised the limitations of conventional pain management. Using his expertise, he developed a unique, holistic approach based on the 6 Pillars of Well Being: Nutrition, Physical Activity, Sleep, Social Connection, Emotional Health, and Belief. This model serves as a framework, enabling us to identify which pillars hold the most significance for each client. By addressing the pillars most relevant to each individual, we create a sustainable, personalised plan for managing pain. Faraz’s approach shifts the focus from short term symptom relief to a balanced, whole-person strategy, providing the foundation for long term relief and enhanced quality of life.

The 6 Pillars of Well Being in Chronic Pain Management

1. Nutrition: Fueling Health and Energy

What you eat can greatly influence your health and pain levels. Many chronic pain sufferers have food sensitivities, and understanding these sensitivities is the first step toward managing pain. Research also supports the use of anti-inflammatory foods and specific supplements for reducing pain.1,2 Our team, in collaboration with your doctor and a nutritionist if needed, works to create dietary habits that support your body and mind, enhancing resilience against pain.

2. Physical Activity: Moving with Purpose

Physical activity is one of the most effective evidence-based tools for managing chronic pain. However, when pain limits movement, finding the right approach is essential. We design gentle, targeted exercise programs tailored to each person’s current abilities, gradually building strength, mobility, and endurance. Through structured physical activity, we help reduce pain over time, enhancing resilience and the ability to engage in daily life.

3. Sleep: Restoring Your Body’s Natural Healing

Quality sleep is vital, especially for those dealing with chronic pain. Pain can disrupt sleep, creating a vicious cycle where poor sleep further exacerbates pain.3 Additionally, inadequate sleep can heighten susceptibility to chronic pain.3 We help clients develop sleep promoting routines, avoiding reliance on sleeping pills like Temazepam, which may extend sleep duration but don’t necessarily improve restorative sleep. Collaborating with your doctor, we address underlying sleep issues, ensuring this pillar supports your journey to pain management.

4. Social Connection: Support on Your Journey

Chronic pain can feel isolating, but maintaining social connections boosts mental resilience and emotional well being. Studies show that positive social interactions can reduce pain intensity and improve overall quality of life.4 We encourage clients to stay engaged with family, friends, or support groups, providing resources to build a supportive community around them.

5. Emotional Health: Managing Stress and Mental Resilience

Managing chronic pain is both a physical and emotional journey. Stress, anxiety, and depression can intensify pain perception. Our team assists clients in developing healthy coping strategies, such as relaxation exercises, mindfulness, or meditation. When needed, we collaborate with mental health professionals, promoting a holistic approach that fortifies emotional resilience and helps maintain a positive outlook.

6. Belief: The Power of Mindset and Motivation

The mindset you bring to pain management is pivotal in your journey toward relief. Studies show that a hopeful, proactive mindset positively affects pain outcomes and quality of life.5 Our physiotherapists and exercise physiologists provide not only physical support but also encouragement, empowering clients to believe in their capacity for improvement. Patients who are invested in our treatment plans tend to achieve more substantial results, reinforcing the importance of mindset and motivation.
