Have you ever wondered how mentally resilient you are?
To determine your resilience, ask yourself these four questions:
– Do you bounce back quickly after hard times?
– Do you have difficulty getting through stressful events?
– Is it hard for you to snap back to your ‘usual self’ when something bad happens?
– Do you take a long time to get over emotional or physical setbacks in your life?
The key to speeding up recovery could be all in the mind
A study investigated the impact of mental resilience and belief on the recovery of adults over 60 years after a hip fracture. 210 people completed a questionnaire to assess their resilience and beliefs before starting a 16-week home physiotherapy program. Each person had their walking distance and speed measured before and after the program.
Interestingly, at the conclusion of the program, the study found that those who scored better on the resilience and belief questionnaire had better recovery outcomes. In fact, those who scored better on the mental resilience and belief questionnaire had an average increase of 25.5m in walking distance and 0.11m/s in walking speed.
How can you leverage mental resilience?
